Meta Title & Description Checker

Check meta title and description length against Google's display limits.

Check that your meta title and meta description fit within Google's display limits. Titles are usually shown up to about 60 characters and descriptions up to about 155–160 — go over and the rest is replaced with an ellipsis in search results.

Counting happens in your browser; nothing is uploaded. For a visual mock-up, try the SERP Snippet Preview.

Why meta tag length matters for SEO

Your meta title is the clickable headline in search results and a strong ranking and click-through signal. If it's too long, Google truncates it, often cutting off the part you most wanted seen. The meta description doesn't directly affect ranking, but it's your ad copy in the results — a clear, compelling description within the limit earns more clicks.

Google truncates by pixel width rather than a strict character count, so treat ~60 characters (title) and ~155–160 (description) as reliable targets. VerbCount flags when you cross the recommended length so you can tighten before publishing.

Writing tags that earn the click

Put the primary keyword near the front of the title and keep the brand at the end. Make every description a promise the page keeps: state the benefit, include the keyword naturally, and end with a reason to click. Avoid duplicate titles and descriptions across pages.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal meta title length?

Around 50–60 characters. Google displays roughly 580 pixels, which is about 60 characters for typical text.

What is the ideal meta description length?

Around 150–160 characters. Beyond that, Google usually truncates the description with an ellipsis.

Does the meta description affect ranking?

Not directly, but a clear, relevant description improves click-through rate, which matters. It's worth writing well.

Why might Google show different text than mine?

Google sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions to better match a query. Writing strong, relevant tags makes that less likely.
